Semaine 43: BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN - Western Stars (2019)

Ma relation avec Bruce Springsteen a débuté sur un malentendu: Born In the USA, chanson stéréoïdée et incomprise m'a toujours rebuté et provoqué chez moi une indifférence totale concernant l'oeuvre du Boss.

Puis, un ami m'a invité à écouter Nebraska. Immense choc, un grand disque.

Alors cette année, lorsque Bruce Springsteen sort Western Stars et sa pochette sublime, je me suis dis qu'il était ENFIN venu le temps d'accorder à Bruce mon temps et mon oreille. Grand bien m'a pris: Western Stars est un chef d'oeuvre, un disque absolument magnifique.

Western Stars, c'est le meilleur album sur l'Amérique aujourd'hui, sa ruralité endormie teintée d'ennui, loin des frasques de New York. Ce sont les petites gens que Trump a complètement grugés, mais aussi des traditions et des racines qui fascinent le petit Européen que je suis. C'est aussi les grands espaces, des décors grandioses, la nature.

Il y a tout ça dans Western Stars, à travers des chansons magnifiques: Hitch Hikin', The Wayfarer, Western Stars, Sundown et There's Go my Miracle. La voix de Bruce, unique, portée par des mélodies quatre étoiles et des orchestrations épiques ou épurées... cette voix est le meilleur porte parole d'une certaine Amérique aujourd'hui.

Et cela fait de Western Stars un album universel et bouleversant.

Semaine 42: BEDOUINE - Bird Songs of a Killjoy (2019)

Bedouine est une chanteuse américaine d’origine syrienne dont le premier album sorti en 2017 m’avait charmé.

Adepte d’un folk sous haute influence Nick Drake pour les orchestrations et Alela Diane pour le chant, son premier album était un joli moment, très attachant.

Avec son second album sorti cette année, Bird Songs of a Killjoy, Bedouine poursuit sa route sur le même thème avec des chansons un peu plus mélodiques et qui s’écartent un peu de la figure tutélaire de Nick Drake.

C’est frais, très agréable, comme le refrain de Sunshine Sometimes qui met un peu de soleil dans notre grisaille, on entend Bedouine pincer ses cordes, c’est comme une boule de coton, à défaut d’être révolutionnaire.

Bien sur, je risquais d’avoir oublié cet album d’ici l’an prochain, sauf que certaines chansons sont tout de même de très haute qualité, comme le magnifiquement orchestré When You’re Gone et surtout Hummingbird, magnifique chanson légèrement lysergique.

Finalement cet album se révèle sur la longueur pas si anodin que ça. Le genre de petit trésor caché qu’on aime chérir.

Semaine 41: IMPERIAL TEEN - Now We Are Timeless (2019)

Je me souviens avoir adoré il y a plus de vingt ans le premier album des américains de Imperial Teen, Seasick.

Tubesque, power pop, ce premier album surfait allègrement sur la vague Weezer-Breeders.

23 ans après, j’apprends que le groupe existe toujours, a sorti 4 autres albums, et sort cette année un nouvel opus, Now We Are Timeless.

Et en 23 ans, le groupe n’a rien changé à sa formule : même refrains catchy porté par des guitares tranchantes, une basse percutante et des synthés entêtants.

C’est frais, simple, direct, assez typé années 90’s. Et ça fait un bien fou.

Bien sur, l’ensemble manque un peu d’originalité et il n’est pas dit que je me souvienne de cet album l’an prochain. Restent cependant des chansons de qualité, à chantonner sous la douche (le refrain de How we Say Goodbye). Et une bonne humeur contagieuse, formidable en ces jours de pluie.

Semaine 40: JAMILA WOODS - Legacy ! Legacy ! (2019)

Jamila Woods ne choisira pas, et c'est tant mieux. Son second album, Legacy ! Legacy !, embrassera tous les genres: le R&B, la Soul, la Pop et empruntera même au Jazz, au Rap et au Rock (le solo de guitare sur Giovanni). 

Et c'est ce qui rend cet album attachant et passionnant: les surprises sont nombreuses, l'ennui totalement absent (un titre comme Miles, par exemple, est à chérir très TRES fort).

Jamila Woods ne choisira pas, et c'est tant mieux. Son second album, Legacy! Legacy!, sera un album de combat, un album militant, mais aussi un album hommage (chaque chanson porte le prénom d'une figure qui a défendu une cause chère au cœur de Jamila).

Legacy! Legacy! est donc un album important, un album qui n'oublie pas, un album qui remet les pendules à l'heure dans une société où l'égoïsme est roi.

Jamila Woods prouve avec son second album qu'elle est l'une des nouvelles figures qui compte en Soul. Il est dommage que ce disque n'ait pas encore eu l'écho qu' il mérite sur les ondes frileuses des radios françaises.

Semaine 39: VAMPIRE WEEKEND - Father of the Bride (2019)

Je vois bien que Vampire Weekend est un groupe doué, brillant. Mais paradoxalement, je n’ai jamais vraiment accroché à leurs disques, jamais totalement adhéré. Peut-être parce que justement ils sont TROP intelligents pour moi, trop complexes, pas assez simples.

C’est un peu comme Animal Collective : j’ai beau essayer, impossible d’être un fan transi.

Father of the Bride, leur quatrième album sorti cette année, ne changera pas la donne. J’ai l’impression d’écouter un mille feuilles bourré d’idées, mais un peu sans queue ni tête, un peu indigeste, un peu trop m’as-tu vu.

Alors bien sûr, plein de petites choses me plaisent sur ce disque : le piano de Harmony Hall, le rythme dance quasi tubesque de Sympathy, ou la mélodie de How Long.

Mais in fine, cet album dans son ensemble me fait peur car je n’arrive pas à tout saisir, je n’arrive pas à me laisser prendre au jeu. Je reste un peu trop spectateur, et c’est peut-être cela mon problème avec Vampire Weekend : cette sensation de n’être qu’ un simple auditeur, dans les gradins, sans en vouloir plus, sans vouloir aller danser dans la fosse.

Semaine 38: THE DIVINE COMEDY -Swallows and Amazons (2019)

Cela devient une habitude ou une tradition : pour chaque nouvel album de sa Divine Comedy, Neil Hannon offre en bonus un album complet selon ses humeurs : le poignant In May avec Foreverland, et, cette année, l’excellent Swallows and Amazons avec Office Politics.

Après avoir quelque peu dérouté et malmené ses fans avec le concept album  Office Politics, Neil Hannon a sans doute souhaité les rassurer avec ces 15 titres plus classiques, qu'il joue seul au piano.

Et sur cet album, Neil Hannon offre rien de moins que deux de ses plus belles chansons de ces dix dernières années : Whistle For A Wind, soit 6 minutes de pur bonheur, d’émotions intenses avec une mélodie en or massif, l’une de ces chansons éternelles à graver dans son cœur.

Et que dire de Navy Stroke ? Avec son tempo rappelant le meilleur de Promenade, on touche une nouvelle fois au sublime.

Le reste de l’album est du même tonneau : The Swallow, magnifique balade au piano, The Conquering Heroes et The Amazon Pirates, ludiques à souhait, jubilatoires, vrai coffres à trésors et récréatifs.

Mais alors, vous allez me dire que cet album est le vrai chef d’œuvre de Neil cette année, et non Office Politics. Oui et non. C’est son complément indispensable, son parfait équilibre. Sans Office Politics, il n’est pas dit que vous aimeriez Swallows and Amazons à sa juste valeur. Et réciproquement.

Ce qui reste certain, c’est que Neil Hannon est le compositeur le plus doué de ces quinze dernières années. Un génie tout simplement.

Semaine 37: OLDEN YOLK - Living Theater (2019)

De Quilt à Guards, en passant pas Jacco Gardner, ils sont nombreux les groupes à avoir redonner vie à un genre moribond: la pop psychédélique.

Il faudra ajouter désormais à notre liste les new-yorkais de Olden Yolk, dont le second album, Living Theater, est une petite merveille de pop kaléidoscopique et ultra-mélodique. 

Refrains catchy, ambiance légèrement embrumée, Olden Yolk  joue avec le chaud (Cotton & Cane) et le froid (le démentiel Castor & Pollux qui lorgne clairement du coté de Broadcast).

Pas une chanson ratée, pas de temps morts, Living Theater distille son venin tranquillement, mais surement. Impossible d'échapper à ce cocon formidablement addictif et charmant, Living Theater est ma très belle surprise de la rentrée, un disque que j'écoute en boucle et qui me fait du bien.

Laissez vous aller, ne résistez pas: Olden Yolk ne vous veut que du bien.
