Semaine 52: The Innocence Mission - Hello I Feel The Same (2015)

Pour finir l'année 2015, rien de mieux qu'un nouvel album de The Innocence Mission, mon groupe folk préféré actuellement.

Et excellente surprise, Hello I feel the Same est un excellent crû, du même tonneau que l'inoubliable We Walked in Song.

D'une délicatesse incroyable, finement orchestré (le magique Tom on the Boulevard), capable de tirer des larmes de crocodiles à n'importe quelle brute (Washington Field Trip), ce nouvel album est une pure merveille à écouter au coin du feux, cet automne et cet hiver.

Un disque qui réchauffe les cœurs, encore plus que celui de Sufjan Stevens, un vrai baume pour nos âmes meurtries, un disque cocon qui fait un bien fou et nous réconcilie avec l'humanité.

Hello I Feel The Same est donc un nouveau grand disque pour une belle année 2015, qui musicalement aurait été riche et dense, indubitablement.

Rendez vous dans 4 jours pour le classement final, avec sans doute quelques ajustements de dernière minute.

Semaine 51: KURT VILE - b'lieve I'm goin down (2015)

Bientôt la fin de l'année, et une nouvelle fois, Kurt Vile restera aux portes de mon top 10.

Pourtant ce nouvel album, b'lieve I'm goin down, est une nouvelle fois excellent et Kurt est toujours mon guitariste contemporain préféré (un jeu complexe mais fluide, pur) et un fin mélodiste (Pretty Pimpin qui ouvre l'album est une merveille).

Alors pourquoi suis-je encore grincheux ? C'est que mon ami Kurt Vile est atteint d'un syndrome terrible en musique: la logorrhée musicale.

Son nouvel album fait une nouvelle fois plus d'une heure. Les gars, je me répète: un album devrait faire 45mn (durée optimale à mes yeux), 50mn au maximum. Au delà, nos cerveaux disjonctent, et notre attention, habitué à une concentration réduite, part en sucette.

Et donc, oui, sur b'lieve i'm goin down, il y a bien 15 minutes de trop, trop de notes, trop de digression.

Mais je ne perds pas espoir: un jour Kurt Vile sortira un album ultime de 45mn où le folk, le blues et le psyché seront magnifiés. Tout le monde sera estomaqué et Kurt sera mon album de l'année, voire de la décennie.

Semaine 50: TRIPTIDES - Azur (2015)

La pochette rétro de ce nouvel album des Américains de Triptides ne ment pas: la musique sur Azur est, elle aussi, légèrement rétro, brassant la sunshine pop, la surf music et la pop psyché des années 60.

Rien de révolutionnaire donc, mais un album agréable, cousin du Summertime ! de The Drums avec qui ils partagent le même goût pour les Beach Boys.

Un peu lisse, on lui préférera cette année le formidable album de Twerps. Mais avec des chansons aussi irrésistibles que Wake ou Not Mine, Triptides nous montre qu'eux aussi savent trousser de chouettes mélodies ensoleillées.

Allez, vous en reprendrez bien une goutte pour illuminer votre hiver ?

Semaine 49: NICOLAS GODIN - Contrepoint (2015)

Sur son premier album solo baptisé Contrepoint, Nicolas Godin, l'une des moitié de Air, invoque Bach comme influence et même source de sa musique, au point d'en réinterpréter des pans entiers au sein de plusieurs chansons.

Comme je ne connais rien de Bach, je découvre cet album de façon innocente, vierge de toute référence. C'est aussi la limite de ma petite chronique, vu que je n'ai compris aucun des clins d’œil faits à Jean Sebastien. Suis je donc vraiment habilité à parler de ce disque ?

C'est du coup ce qui me gêne dans cet album: l'impression de rester à quai, d'être juste spectateur. 

A mes yeux, tout cela sonne comme un nouvel album de Air, gentiment lounge. Mis à part le formidable Glenn qui nous envoie direct chez Ennio Morricone et au septième ciel, cet album me laisse quelque peu indifférent.

Allez, en 2016, je mets dans mes résolutions de me pencher un peu plus sur l'oeuvre de Bach. Et ainsi mourir moins idiot.

Semaine 48: BEACH HOUSE - Depression Cherry (2015)

En 2008, lorsque j'ai découvert Devotion de Beach House, leur second album, j'ai été submergé par cette dream pop miraculeuse, belle comme un astre, une musique lumineuse et envoûtante.

Deux ans plus tard, je succombais une nouvelle fois à Teen Dream, encore plus beau que Devotion, même si cet album commençait à ressasser les mêmes sons.

Bloom, l'album suivant, n'était finalement qu'un décalque de Teen Dream: pas une once de surprise, malgré un plaisir intact à écouter ces mélopées aériennes.

Voici donc le cinquième album, Depression Cherry, avec toujours les mêmes recettes, rien de très neuf, et toujours un talent certain pour tisser un mur de coton mélancolique autour de vous.

C'est beau, cela fait du bien, mais on peine à voir la différence ou l'évolution depuis Teen Dream.

Ne boudons pas notre plaisir: un album de Beach House sera toujours plus important que l'intégrale de Maroon 5, mais un soupçon de lassitude nous étreint.

Semaine 47: NEW ORDER - Music Complete (2015)

Cette année 2015 aura été un peu l'année du retour des Momies.

On a eu des come-backs réussis (The Apartments bien sur, The Charlatans) et puis des ratés (Les Chemical Brothers, Mercury Rev).

Et bim, qui vient s'inviter ni vu ni connu au bal des momies ? New Order en personne, sans Peter Hook, mais avec Music Complete sous le bras, histoire de voir si la magie opère toujours.

A mes yeux, New Order n'a plus rien sorti d'intéressant depuis Technique. Un bail donc.

Oh, bien sur, il y a quelques trucs écoutables sur Republic, et Crystal est une tuerie sur Get Ready. Mais c'est tout.

Et Music Complete ? Un naufrage. Une bouillie electro-dance assez innommable (non mais écoutez Tutti Frutti si vous ne me croyez pas !). 

On gardera peut être Singularity et Restless si on est gentil, et puis rien d'autres. L'album se termine même avec un truc pas possible, Superheated, et ses machines dopées aux anabolisants et son refrain qui pue du bec.

La vieillesse est un naufrage et les momies devraient rester dans leurs caveaux.

Semaine 46: JUAN WAUTERS - Who Me ? (2015)

Sur son nouvel album, Juan Wauters pose nonchalamment sur le capot d’une voiture sur le pont de Brooklyn. On devine qu’il a dû arrêter la circulation l’espace de 5 minutes pour la photo, et faire chier un paquet de yuppies ou de hipsters rentrant à la maison. C’est tout Juan.

Rien à foutre, il fait ce qu’il veut, marie tout et n’importe quoi sur son album sacrément rigolo et jouissif, Who me ?.

Prenons She Might Get Shot . Sur une mélodie bancale à la Jonathan Richman, il raconte l’histoire d’une fille qui fait plus attention à ce que les autres pensent d’elle qu’à être juste elle… C’est vachard et très drôle. A la fin, le public d’une petite salle applaudit. On a envie de faire de même.

Cet album attachant, car ne se prenant pas au sérieux, finit même avec un truc dingue à la Ariel Pink, El Show de Los Muertos, qui débute gentiment en mélodie ultra pop, avant de virer vers un hip-hop sombre, genre Cypress Hill chanté par Beck sur les synthés de John Carpenter.

Semaine 45: TAME IMPALA - Currents (2015)

Le nouvel album de Tame Impala, Currents, s'ouvre sur une chanson complètement dingue, une chanson à vous redonner un moral d'acier, pour regonfler nos plumes (et on en a vraiment besoin ces temps-ci, après les lâches attaques de vendredi).

Let It Happen est donc un tube, un hymne à la Metronomy, une fiesta d'enfer. Et on attendait pas vraiment les Australiens de Tame impala de ce coté-ci du dance-floor, eux qu'on avait connu plus psychédélique et porté sur les ambiances enfumées.

On l'a dit, on le répète: on saluera toujours les groupes qui ont le courage de se remettre en question, de chercher de nouveaux sons, de tenter de nouvelles aventures soniques. Tame Impala est de cette trempe.

Alors ok, Currents n'est pas toujours réussi, avec ses machines parfois mal domptées, quelques guitares vulgaires, quelques creux mélodiques. Mais il y a une poignée de chansons incontournables sur cet album, de grandes choses notamment deux slows magnifiques, Yes I'm Changing, beau comme du 10cc ou du Korgies, et 'Cause I'm a Man, une scie R&B collante vraiment réussie.

Current est aujourd'hui un vrai baume pour mon cœur. C'est inestimable.

Semaine 44: LIGHTNING IN A TWILIGHT HOUR - Fragments of a former moon (2015)

Adolescent, mes Beatles à moi se nommaient Belle and Sebastian et The Field Mice.

J'achetais tous leurs albums et eps de façon compulsive, je guettais leurs venues en France. Ils étaient mes héros.

Cette année, les hasards de la vie ont fait que mes deux anciens groupes fétiches étaient de retour avec deux nouveaux albums. 

Pour Bobby Wratten, ce sera sous un nouvel alias: après les Field Mice donc, Northern Picture Library et Trembling Blue Stars, voici Lightning In A Twilight Hour.

Sur ce premier album, Bobby Wratten reprend les choses là où il les avait laissées avec Trembling Blue Stars, soit une dream-pop délicate, sous haute influence électronique, finement ouvragée.

Pour le fan de la première heure que je suis, le résultat est magnifique, totalement prégnant, passionnant.

Entre chansons pop (The Passerby) et longues mélopées presque cosmiques (Fever dreams of Emilia), Bobby se refuse à choisir. Et c'est tant mieux.

Mon disque de cœur pour 2015.

Semaine 43: THE APARTMENTS - No Song, No Spell, No Madrigal (2015)

Pourquoi suis-je autant bouleversé à chaque écoute du nouvel album de The Apartments, No Song, No Spell, No Madrigal ?

Pourquoi suis-je autant touché par les mélodies intemporelles composées par Peter Milton Walsh, leader charismatique de ce groupe australien ?

Pourquoi est-ce que je chiale comme une midinette à CHAQUE écoute de Twenty One, assurément l’une des chansons les plus poignantes de ces dix (vingt ? trente ?) dernières années ?

Je ne sais pas. Je suis incapable de l’expliquer. Et je m'en fous. C’est la magie de certains disques.

Sur ce nouvel album , Peter Milton Walsh aborde sans pathos la mort de son fils, à vingt et un ans, et tout ce qu’il ne pourra et n’a pas pu faire avec lui.

Une catharsis qui culmine donc avec Twenty One, une chanson saisissante, déchirante, avec son crescendo ahurissant, une des chansons majeures de ce siècle, rien de moins.

La qualité du titre éponyme, du merveilleux Black Ribbons (en duo avec Natasha Penot qui rappelle Harriett Wheeler des Sundays), du Go-Betweensien September Skies ou du Pale Fountainsien Please don’t Say Remeber (avec son intro à la New Order), nous font oublier  les deux micro baisses de régime que sont The House That We Once Lived In et Swap Places.

Après le génial Goon de Tobias Jesso Jr, No Song, No Spell, No Madrigal est donc l’autre disque IMMENSE de l’année 2015. Une année à déjà graver dans nos mémoires.
