Semaine 48: JOAN SHELLEY - Like the River Loves The Sea (2019)

Elle est de retour, ma Joan Shelley chérie, découverte il y a deux ans avec son inépuisable cinquième album intitulée Joan Shelley.

Entre temps, j'ai tout de même raté son sixième album, sorti en catimini l'an dernier. Mais pour Like The River Loves The Sea, je suis là et dès le deuxième titre, Coming Down For you, je mets un genou à terre devant cette mélodie, ces arrangements, cette chanson absolument magnifique.

Puis Joan Shelley distille 10 autres petites vignettes folk, toujours aussi épurées, d'une douceur inégalable, parfois rehaussées d'un peu de piano (When What It Is). C'est très beau, c'est un disque d'hiver à écouter en fin de journée, lorsque le jour décline.

Soyons franc, c'est un poil moins bien que son album éponyme, mais cela reste un album d'une grande classe, à avoir écouté cette année. Et Joan Shelley rejoint cette année le clan des très grandes chanteuses folk: Jessica Pratt et Bedouine en tête.

Vashti Bunyan peut se reposer un peu: son héritage perdure, grâce à ces grandes chanteuses.

Semaine 47: PURPLE MOUNTAINS - Purple Mountains (2019)

Au sein des Silver Jews, David Berman aurait dû être immense tant ses compositions folk un peu bancales avaient du charme et révélaient un talent d'écriture unique.

En 2019, avec son nouveau groupe, les Purple Mountains, David Berman aurait dû être immense.

Mais le 7 août 2019, alors que son album commençait à recueillir des critiques dithyrambiques, David Berman a tiré sa révérence et choisi de quitter ce petit monde étriqué.

Alors ce premier album éponyme, formidablement composé et arrangé, sera le chant du cygne de David, un disque que j’écoute désormais avec un pincement au cœur tant persiste une impression de gâchis.

Car ce premier album des Purple Mountains est très bon, avec plusieurs chansons intouchables, où éclate le talent de David Berman (Darkness and Cold ou I Loved Being My Mother's Son).

Cette pop-folk typiquement américaine, elle sait nous émouvoir, mais aussi nous séduire avec ces mélodies à chantonner sous sa douche (Margaritas at the Mall).

J'aurai tant aimé en entendre davantage. David me manque déjà.

All My Happiness is Gone, chante il sur le deuxième fantastique titre de cet album.

Merde, la mienne aussi, David, la mienne aussi.

Semaine 46: MATTIEL - Satis Factory (2019)

Avec son deuxième album intitulé Satis Factory, l'américaine Mattiel frappe un grand coup dans la cour des chanteuses rock. Car cet album transpire l'urgence, le stupre et la déconne, et rarement cette année je n'avais entendu une aussi belle collection de chansons électriques.

Ça démarre au quart de tour avec Til the Moment of Death et Rescue You, brûlots bluesy rappelant les Walkmen. Puis c'est au tour de Je ne Me Connais pas de vous rendre complètement marteau: riff de guitares parfait, cris punk à se damner et refrain en béton armé. Cette chanson devrait être un tube, partout, dans toutes les galaxies. Mais l'univers est sourd.

Et toute la suite est du même acabit, Mattiel chantant avec une certaine nonchalance, rendant Satis Factory éminemment sympathique, offrant une proximité rare.

Mattiel est clairement ma meilleure copine du moment. Vivement la suite !

Semaine 45: WHITNEY - Forever Turned Around (2019)

Je relisais ce que j'avais écrit en 2016 concernant le premier album de Whitney, Light Upon the Lake, et je me croirais revenu 3 ans en arrière pour décrire ce que j'éprouve à l'écoute de leur deuxième album, Forever Turned Around.

Je ne vais tout de même pas faire un copier coller de mes impressions de 2016 !?

Sauf que j'éprouve exactement la même chose aujourd'hui: Forever Turned Around est un album agréable, plaisant, doux, mais qui ne chamboulera pas ma vie. La voix du chanteur, Max Kakacek, haut perchée, est parfois horripilante, et ce soft rock dégoulinant de guimauve peut rapidement peser sur nos nerfs.

Quelques jolies mélodies placées au début (Giving Up et Used to be Lonely) sont l'arbre qui cache la forêt: les chansons se font plus rares ensuite et on assiste plus à un joli déroulé d'harmonies qu'à la confirmation d'un vrai talent d'écriture.

Bref Forever Turned Around est un album sympathique, sans plus.

Semaine 44: ALTIN GUN - Gece (2019)

Le rock turc psyché des années 70 n'en finit plus de bouleverser la vie des gens. Dernier en date, le bassiste Jasper Verhulst qui en entendant cette musique affolante décide fissa de créer un groupe avec des copains néerlandais et surtout une chanteuse et un chanteur turcs pour aller jusqu'au bout du délire.

Altin Gün est né et Gece, leur deuxième album sorti cette année, permet au groupe de mettre le feu lors de concerts épiques, comme à la Route du Rock. Car Gece est une bombe groovy qui déclenche irrésistiblement des mouvements lascifs de votre bassin, donne des fourmis à vos jambes et vous transforme en derviche tourneur.

Yolcu, Leyla ou Kolbasti, autant de tubes dansants, chantés en turc, et absolument irrésistibles. Ne luttez pas, Altin Gün a pris possession de vos gambettes pour ne plus les lâcher.

Quelques petites douceurs folk et psyché en fin d'album vous permettront de souffler, mais la transe a été garantie.
